The Lonicera nigra it is a deciduous shrub, 1–2 meters tall, found in cool, mountainous regions of Central and Southern Europe, including Greece (mainly in the mountains of Northern Pindos).

What is Gemmotherapy?

Gemmotherapy is a branch of phytotherapy that uses extracts from young parts of plants—mainly buds, young shoots, and rootlets—which contain the growth potential of the entire plant. These parts are collected at a specific stage of development and extracted in a mixture of glycerin, alcohol, and water.

• Mild inflammations of mouth and throat (as a gargle)

Pharmacological Properties and Actions

• Mild inflammatory conditions of the upper respiratory tract: as an infusion or gargle for pharyngitis, stomatitis or gingivitis, due to the antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties of the leaves and bark.

• Skin inflammations and mild eczematous rashes: as a poultice made from boiled leaves or bark, with astringent and soothing action.

• Vasoprotective and antioxidant support: possible use in combination with other plants to strengthen capillaries, due to anthocyanins.

• Diuretic support: mild diuretic action with the use of light leaf infusions (with caution and not in chronic conditions).

• Adjunctive use in rheumatic conditions: due to possible anti-inflammatory action, especially when combined with other anti-rheumatic herbs.

• Helpful in managing bronchitis

How to Use

• 15-20 drops of extract in a little water or directly in the mouth, 1-2 times per day. Duration of use: For as long as you want or need, with occasional breaks of 1-2 weeks. 

Molecular Composition of Extract

Flavonoids: Possible constituents such as luteolin and quercetin, which exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiallergic activity by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and neutralizing free radicals.

Polyphenolic acids: Includes caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid, known for their antioxidant capacity, as well as for mild antiviral and hepatoprotective action.

Anthocyanins: Such as cyanidin-3-glucoside, which contribute to the stability of vascular walls, exhibit vasoprotective and neuroprotective action, and enhance vision.

Iridoid glycosides: Possible presence of loganin or its derivatives. Iridoids exhibit antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties and may influence cellular signaling in inflammatory processes.

Tannins: They exhibit astringent and antimicrobial action, mainly applied externally to inflamed or irritated surfaces of the skin and mucous membranes.

Precautions

• Possibility of allergic reaction in individuals sensitive to Caprifoliaceae.
• Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• Not to be used by individuals with severe renal failure.

Side Effects

The Lonicera nigra plant has limited but noteworthy traditional use mainly externally, due to its anti-inflammatory, astringent and antioxidant properties. Internal use of the berries is not recommended because of toxicity.
