TINCTURE FROM A COMBINATION OF HERBAL EXTRACTS BASED ON HAWTHORN

Hawthorn has many therapeutic applications for the human body and more specifically for the cardiovascular system. One of these applications is the management of blood pressure. Parts of the herb, such as the fruit, contain antioxidants that have the ability to relax and dilate blood vessels, which lowers high blood pressure and can provide relief from symptoms such as palpitations. The cardioprotective role of the plant does not stop there, as it can help with arrhythmia, heart failure, hypotension and protection against arteriosclerosis. In addition, hawthorn acts as a natural sedative and helps combat anxiety, nervousness and insomnia. It also contributes to reducing total cholesterol and LDL and significantly improves memory. In recent years China, France and Germany have included hawthorn in their pharmacopoeia.

CHARACTERISTICS OF HAWTHORN

Hawthorn, Crataegus oxyacantha, belongs to the Rosaceae family and is a deciduous plant that grows as a shrub or small tree. The trunk of the plant reaches 10 centimeters in thickness and, like the branches, bears thorns 1–3 centimeters long. Its dense foliage consists of smooth, lobed, dark green leaves, which take on various shades of red in autumn. In May and June it produces fragrant white flowers, and in autumn it is covered with ripe, spherical red fruits. Hawthorn is a slow-growing plant that can reach 10 meters in height and live for hundreds of years. It is resistant to drought and low temperatures, and is often found growing in mountainous areas. Its growth is favored by sunlight and well-drained soil.

HISTORY

It is said that hawthorn took its name from the Greek word “kratos,” meaning
“strong,” referring to the sturdy trunk of the plant. Hawthorn wood
was used for its strength by the Teutons and the Germans, who in the 2nd century BC exploited it as a raw material
for making tools. In addition, various peoples incorporated its fruits into
their diet, either raw or cooked.
During the Middle Ages, the herb became known for its therapeutic
value and was consumed for cardiovascular diseases. Thus, it acquired the
name “the food of the heart.” At the same time, thanks to the legend that Christ’s crown
was made from the thorny branches of the plant, hawthorn was
also known as “Christ’s thorn.” For this reason, it became a symbol of sacrifice and
protection.
