Characteristics of Ylang ylang
Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) is an evergreen tree that grows in tropical climates and is therefore mainly found in Asia in countries such as Malaysia, the Philippines, Madagascar, Indonesia, as well as in Australia.
The tree grows rapidly and can reach 20 meters in height. It prefers moist soils and sunny to semi-shaded locations. It has long, glossy leaves, and its flowers, which are also long, start out green and as they mature turn yellow with an intense, sensual fragrance. Its flowering period lasts a long time, from May to December.
Ylang ylang essential oil is extracted from the fresh flowers of the tree, which are handpicked in the early morning hours. The flowers are quite delicate and the distillation process takes place immediately after harvesting.
History of Ylang ylang
The tree got its name from the Filipinos and refers to the way the flowers appear to be “hanging in the air”. It is said that local inhabitants prepared a therapeutic oil from the flowers combined with coconut oil or palm oil, which they used to strengthen the hair and protect the skin from dryness.
In 1860 a German sailor was impressed by the beauty and fragrance of the flower and started the first production of essential oil distillation in Manila.
For many years now it has been considered one of the most important raw materials in perfumery. In the last century its medicinal properties were first recognized by French chemists and it then began to be used as an antidepressant, aphrodisiac, antihypertensive and as an ingredient in products for treating hair loss.

Chinese Medicine – Ayurveda
According to Chinese medicine, ylang ylang has a cool and moist nature and these properties enhance heart function by dispelling excess heat from the area.
In this way, it helps in cases of hypertension, arrhythmia and tachycardia. In addition, its sensual aroma supports healthy libido and emotional expression.
Similarly, Ayurveda classifies ylang ylang in the air (vata) category. The cooling effect of air soothes the uncontrolled heat of fire (excessive hunger, anger, criticism, insomnia) and helps address hair loss caused by stress. It enhances inner movement and reduces the earth element and sluggishness. Its aroma revitalizes the 2nd chakra of reproduction, the swadisthana.
