Characteristics of Pine

Pine (Pinus sylvestris, commonly known as Scots pine) is an evergreen coniferous tree that thrives mainly in the cold climates of Europe and Asia. It often reaches a height of 35 meters and is known for its resin, long needles, and intensely aromatic scent. The essential oil is extracted primarily from the needles and sometimes from the young branches, through steam distillation.

History of Pine

Since antiquity, the pine tree has been considered a sacred tree associated with purification and protection. The ancient Greeks and Romans used it in purification rituals and to disinfect the air. In folk medicine, it was used to relieve respiratory problems and rheumatism, while medieval herbalists particularly valued pine resin and oil for their antiseptic and expectorant properties.

Chemical composition

Essential oil of pine from fresh needles using the method of steam distillation.

Ingredients

Pine essential oil contains mainly monoterpenes such as alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, limonene, camphene and borneol. These compounds give the oil its antiseptic, analgesic, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actions. Its high concentration in pinene makes it extremely effective for relieving congestion and muscle pain.

Instructions for use

Pine essential oil can be used for:

  • Inhalations for relief from colds and congestion.

  • Diluted in a carrier oil (e.g. jojoba, almond oil) for massage against muscle pain, rheumatism and to boost circulation.

  • In aromatherapy devices for air purification and mental stimulation.

Use in Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, pine is used to dispel dampness and tonify Lung Qi. It is considered excellent for balancing energy flows related to the respiratory system and blood circulation.
In Ayurveda, pine is mainly used to reduce Kapha dosha, eliminating stagnation, mucus and lethargy. It enhances circulation and has a warming effect, providing pain relief while also strengthening the mind, promoting focus and clarity.

Useful tips

- The use of pine essential oil should be avoided during pregnancy, breastfeeding and in children.
- Essential oils are intended for external use and are always used diluted in a carrier oil or other base.
- Avoid direct contact with skin, eyes and mouth.
