Its characteristics Apricot tree
The apricot tree is a fruit-bearing, deciduous tree originating from Central Asia and northern China. It belongs to the large Rosaceae family, in the same genus as cherry, almond, plum and peach.
The species of apricot that is widely cultivated for its tasty fruits is Prunus armeniaca. In its natural growth, the tree can reach up to 12 meters in height. Its productivity begins after the 2nd year of life. The flowering of the apricot tree lasts a few weeks, starting and completing fruit set early in the spring with the first warm days. Its flowers are male and female and bloom before the foliage.
Under ideal conditions, the apricot tree can reach 100 years of age.
Apricot essential oil is distilled from the kernels of the fruit by the method of hydrodistillation.
History of the Apricot Tree
The apricot tree originates from China at least 4,000 years ago and later the seed travelled to the surrounding regions.
Today many varieties of the tree can be found in Asia, as its fruits are highly appreciated for their taste and aroma. It is worth mentioning that the beneficial properties of the fruit have been recognized in the field of cosmetology. Apricot essential oil and apricot oil are key ingredients in modern formulas of Asian cosmetics.
Ancient Chinese healers recommended it for heart health and for treating eczema and other skin conditions.
The Romans were the ones who gave the name praecocia to the apricot tree, meaning “that which ripens first”, due to its short flowering and rapid fruit development. Over the years the name evolved into apricot.
