CHARACTERISTICS CHARDON MARIE – SILYBUM

Silybum marianum is a species of milk thistle. It is known by different names such as thistle, Milk thistle, Chardon Marie, It is an annual or biennial plant of the Asteraceae family.
Milk thistle can reach 30cm to 2m tall. It has a conical shape and its stem is covered by a cottony surface which is surrounded by large lance-shaped hard leaves ending in pointed and thick spines at the ends. The red-purple flower heads bloom in our country from June to August.
Silybum marianum chooses to grow in sunny places and we will meet it in many countries along the planet as a cultivated plant or as a wild native plant in meadows and foothills.

HISTORY

Milk Thistle's name comes from its leaves which are sticky due to the milky sap they contain.
The Roman herbalist Pliny described milk thistle as "excellent for removing bile." The Ancient Greeks and Romans used milk thistle to treat snakebites and liver diseases. Although it has been used medicinally for over 2,000 years in many cultures, it is often treated as an invasive weed.

Roasted milk thistle seeds have been used in the past as a coffee substitute.
Today, milk thistle is cultivated mainly as a medicinal plant, but is sometimes used as a food source mainly in Europe but also in Asia and North America.
