VALERIAN CHARACTERISTICS

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a perennial flowering plant belonging to the Valerianaceae family. It grows wild in Greece, Europe, China, and Korea. You’ll find it in meadows near rivers and lakes. In Greece, valerian is cultivated as a perennial plant. If not limited by harvesting, the plant’s height and width can reach up to one and a half meters. The leaves are large, toothed, and deep green, up to 20 cm long. The plant blooms in summer, producing many small flowers in clusters, which are white or pink. It develops a rich and deep root system with a distinctive aroma, and the root is the part of the plant with the most significant medicinal properties.

HISTORY

The name of the herb comes from the Latin verb valere, which means “to be strong and healthy.” In traditional medicine, the herb was referenced by Hippocrates and Galen, who recommended it as a remedy for insomnia and nervousness. Due to its distinctive smell, people often placed it at the entrance of their homes as protection against evil spirits. The 17th-century astrologer and herbalist Nicholas Culpeper believed the plant was under the influence of Mercury, and thus had the ability to promote movement and warmth in the body. Traditional farmers planted valerian near vegetables to boost growth and productivity. Today, valerian is intensively cultivated in many parts of the world and is utilized by pharmaceutical companies that produce preparations to combat anxiety and insomnia.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, valerian is called Xie Cao
and is recommended for women of reproductive age to help regulate the monthly cycle. It is believed to have analgesic properties and to stop excessive bleeding. It calms the spirit, and the use of the herb activates the liver and heart meridians.

COMPOSITION

Alcohol (in variable ratios 50% - 90%), valerian rhizome. Oral, natural extract from mother tincture (D1).

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF VALERIAN

Valepotriates (responsible for the plant's calming effect), GABA, volatile oils 2%, volatile alkaloids, sugars, starch, resins, essential oil, organic acids, nitrogenous compounds, isovaleric acid (responsible for the plant's characteristic smell), resin, tannins.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

- 30 drops diluted in 1/2 glass of water.
- 1-2 times a day for a specific period of time or as directed
by your doctor or pharmacist.
- 20 minutes before meals
