The Boldo comes from the plant Peumus boldus, which belongs to the family MonimiaceaeIt is an evergreen tree that grows mainly in Chile. Its leaves are used in herbal medicine for their medicinal properties.
Chemical Composition
Boldo tincture contains:
- Alkaloids: Boldine.
- Essential oils: Ascaridole, cineole.
- Flavonoids: Rutin, kaempferol.
- Tannins and resins.
Pharmacological Properties and Actions
- Choleretic and cholestatic: Stimulates the production and flow of bile, aiding digestion.
- Diuretic: Supports the elimination of toxins through urine.
- Antioxidant: Protects cells from oxidative damage.
- Antiparasitic: Indicated for the treatment of intestinal parasites.
- Sedative: Traditionally used to relieve digestive and nervous disorders.
Indications for Use
- Indigestion and bloating.
- Liver disorders (e.g. cholecystitis).
- Constipation due to insufficient bile flow.
- Intestinal disorders or mild parasitic infection.
How to Use
20-30 drops of tincture in water or decoction, 1-2 times a day.
- Duration of use: No more than 4 weeks
Precautions
- Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Not for use in people with obstructive disorders of the liver or gallbladder.
- Avoid excessive use due to ascaridol toxicity.
Side effects
- In overdose, it may cause nausea, vomiting, or dizziness.
- Rare allergic reactions.
