Characteristics
The Tea Tree, or Melaleuca alternifolia, is a species of tree of the myrtle family, Myrtaceae that grows wild in Australia in swampy areas, mainly near ravines. There are many varieties of tea tree but only one has healing properties.
The tree can reach 7 m with fairly broad and massive foliage of around 10. Its leaves are rich in oil and the flowers appear in white or cream fluffy inflorescences which bloom for a short time, mainly in spring to early of summer. Mature trees produce flowers about 2 years after planting. Its growth is favored by abundant sun and fertile soil.
History of the Tea Tree
The plant began to be cultivated systematically from 1970 and took the name of Melaleuca linariifolia var. alternifolia from the Latin alternus meaning "alternate" and folium meaning "leaf" and referring to the characteristic alternate arrangement of its leaves.
Australian herbalists have long considered tea tree oil an important natural antiseptic and used it to treat stings, burns, wounds and skin infections. It is said to stimulate the immune system and serves as an effective treatment against bacterial and fungal infections.
Tea tree essential oil has been used for over 100 years for therapeutic purposes mainly through aromatherapy.
The first article on the therapeutic benefits of tea tree was published in 1930 in an Australian medical journal describing a recipe using tea tree oil to treat a sore throat.
