Characteristics of the Apricot
Apricot is a fruit-bearing and deciduous tree native to central Asia and northern China. It belongs to the large Rosaceae family, in the same genus as cherry, almond, plum and peach.
The species of apricot that is widely cultivated for its delicious fruit is Prunus armeniaca. The tree, in its natural growth, can reach up to 12 meters in height. Its productivity begins after the 2nd year of life. The flowering of the apricot lasts a few weeks, beginning and completing the setting of the fruit in early spring, with the first heat. Its flowers are male and female and bloom before the foliage.
Under ideal conditions, the apricot tree can live up to 100 years.
Apricot essential oil is distilled from the kernels of the fruit using the hydrodistillation method.
History of the apricot tree
The apricot originated in China at least 4,000 years ago and later the seed traveled to the surrounding areas.
Today one can find many varieties of the tree in Asia, since its fruits are much loved for their taste and aroma. It is worth mentioning that the beneficial properties of the fruit have been recognized in the field of cosmetology. Apricot essential oil and oil are a key ingredient in modern Asian cosmetic recipes.
The ancient healers of China recommended it for heart health and the treatment of eczema and other skin conditions.
The Romans were the ones who gave the name praecocia to the apricot, which means "that which ripens first", because of the short flowering and development of the fruit. Over the years the name took the form of apricot.
