Boldo comes from the plant Peumus boldus, which belongs to the family Monimiaceae. It is an evergreen tree that grows mainly in Chile. Its leaves are used in phytotherapy for their medicinal properties.

The Boldo tincture contains:
- Alkaloids: Boldine.
- Volatile oils: Ascaridole, cineole.
- Flavonoids: Rutin, kaempferol.
- Tannins and resins.
Pharmacological Properties and Actions
- Cholagogue and choleretic: Stimulates bile production and flow, aiding digestion.
- Diuretic: Supports the elimination of toxins through the urine.
- Antioxidant: Protects cells from oxidative damage.
- Antiparasitic: Indicated for the treatment of intestinal parasites.
- Soothing: Traditionally used to relieve digestive and nervous disorders.
Indications for Use
- Indigestion and bloating.
- Liver disorders (e.g. cholecystitis).
- Constipation due to insufficient bile flow.
- Intestinal disorders or mild parasitic infection.
How to Use
20–30 drops of tincture in water or herbal infusion, 1–2 times per day.
Precautions
- Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Do not use in individuals with obstructive disorders of the liver or gallbladder.
- Excessive use should be avoided due to the toxicity of ascaridole.
Side effects
- In overdose, it may cause nausea, vomiting or dizziness.
- Rare allergic reactions.
The Boldo tincture is a useful herbal preparation for improving liver function and digestion. Nevertheless, it should be used with care and moderation, particularly due to its ascaridole content, and preferably under the guidance of a specialist.
