CHARACTERISTICS OF RADIS NOIR – BLACK RADISH

Radis noir (Raphanus sativus L. var. niger) belongs to the Brassicaceae family and is a variety of radish that thrives mainly in Europe and Asia. This particular variety differs in color, as it is black on the outside and white on the inside. It has a much larger, more elongated root than the usual red radish. Its length can reach up to 80 cm. Black radish is planted in the fall or early spring and can easily be grown even in a pot. It is rich in nutrients such as iron, copper, zinc, and more.

HISTORY

The radish is one of the oldest root vegetables to appear on earth. Its easy use and consumption contributed to the spread of its cultivation, which soon expanded to many parts of the world. Traditional farmers observed that black radish produced successful crops when planted among other vegetables. Its use dates back to antiquity, when it was known as 'raphanida,' and it wasn’t just eaten fresh in salads or soups, but was also recommended by ancient healers for dissolving kidney stones, gallstones, improving digestion, and supporting liver function.
