HAWTHORN CHARACTERISTICS

Hawthorn Crataegus oxyacantha belongs to the Rosaceae family
and is a deciduous plant that grows as a shrub or small
tree. The trunk reaches up to 10 centimeters thick and, like its branches,
bears thorns 1-3 centimeters long. Its dense foliage consists of
smooth, lobed, dark green leaves, which in autumn
turn various shades of red. In May and June, it produces white
fragrant flowers, and in autumn, it is covered with ripe, spherical red
fruits.
Hawthorn is a slow-growing plant that can reach 10 meters in height and
live for hundreds of years. It is drought- and cold-resistant,
often found growing in mountainous areas. Its growth
is favored by sunlight and well-drained soil.

HISTORY

It is said that hawthorn got its name from the Greek word “kratos,” meaning
“strong,” referring to the plant’s sturdy trunk. Hawthorn
wood was used by the Teutons and Germans in the 2nd century BC as raw material for
tool making. Additionally, various peoples included its fruits in their
diet, either raw or cooked.
During the Middle Ages, the herb became known for its medicinal
properties and was consumed for cardiovascular conditions. It thus earned the
name “the food of the heart.” Also, due to the legend that Christ’s crown
was made from the plant’s thorny branches, hawthorn was
known as “the thorn of Christ.” For this reason, it symbolized sacrifice and
protection.

Τα κύρια συστατικά του φυτού είναι : Φλαβονοειδή, τριτερπενοειδή, ουρσολικό οξύ,
κοροσολικό οξύ, μονοτερπινοειδή, οργανικά οξέα, λιγνάνες, φαινολικές ενώσεις
όπως ρουτίνη, chlorogenic acid, ισοκουερσετίνη.

ΟΔΗΓΙΕΣ ΧΡΗΣΗΣ                                                                                                                                          

- 30 σταγόνες αραιωμένες σε 1/2 ποτήρι νερό
- 1 -2 φορές την ημέρα για συγκεκριμένο χρονικό διάστημα ή σύμφωνα με τις οδηγίες
του γιατρού ή του φαρμακοποιού.
