Characteristics of Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus, mainly, but also E. radiata, E. citriodora, etc.) is an evergreen, fast-growing tree native to Australia but now cultivated in many parts of the world, mainly in warm climates. Its characteristic aroma is fresh, penetrating and camphoraceous. Its leaves contain volatile oils, which are steam-distilled to produce eucalyptus essential oil.

History of Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus was traditionally used by the Aboriginal people of Australia for wound healing, relief from cough and cleansing the air. In the 18th century, European settlers recognized its medicinal properties and it was soon adopted by Western herbal medicine, mainly for the treatment of respiratory conditions and rheumatic pains.

Ingredients

Eucalyptus essential oil from the leaves of the tree, distilled by the method of hydrodistillation.

Chemical composition

Eucalyptus essential oil is rich in eucalyptol (1,8-cineole) – up to 80%, a component with decongestant, expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties. It also contains α-pinene, limonene, γ-terpineol and α-terpineol, which enhance its action against microbes and viruses. This particular essential oil is considered one of the most potent in herbal medicine.

Instructions for use

  • Inhalations/Diffusion: In an oil burner or steam bath to decongest the respiratory tract.

  • Topically (diluted): In a carrier oil for rubs on the chest, shoulders or temples in cases of tension.

  • Room cleaners: Ideal for use in sprays or detergents for a natural antiseptic effect.

Use in Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, eucalyptus is used to disperse external pathogenic dampness and to clear heat from the lungs, providing relief from cough, bronchitis and nasal congestion.
In Ayurveda, the oil is considered cooling and purifying, beneficial for the Kapha dosha, helping to release mucus and to stimulate the respiratory and mental sphere. It is also used to reduce the feeling of heaviness and stagnation.

Useful tips

- The use of eucalyptus essential oil should be avoided during pregnancy, breastfeeding and in children.
- Essential oils are intended for external use and must always be used diluted in a carrier oil or other medium.
- Avoid direct contact with skin, eyes and mouth.
