Characteristics of frankincense
Frankincense is the aromatic resin produced from the trunk of a tree known as Boswellia or Lebanon. It is extracted from cuts made in the trunk and branches of the tree. Boswellia is a family of deciduous trees consisting of nearly 30 species.
It originates from India and countries of Africa and the Middle East (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Oman, Yemen). Its height can reach from 2 to 10 meters depending on the variety. When they reach 8 – 10 years old, the trees are ready to be exploited for their resin which continues to be produced as a sticky resin for about 40 years.
The tree is sensitive to cold climate, rain and winds. As it has high tolerance to heat, it thrives in tropical climates.
Frankincense has been recognized for its medicinal properties such as anti-inflammatory, anti-asthmatic, anti-cancer, antiseptic and even anxiolytic effects. It enhances the fight against wrinkles and has a positive effect on the treatment of acne.
History of incense
In India, it is estimated that the tree has been cultivated since 1500 BC. In the ancient Indian practice of Ayurveda, frankincense was used for its many medicinal properties.
More specifically, they used it as an anti-inflammatory to treat respiratory problems such as bronchitis and asthma.
For thousands of years, cultures have been enchanted by the sweet aroma of frankincense, which is why they used it in religious ceremonies. Its balsamic aroma is reminiscent of camphor and lemon notes. In ancient Egypt, they believed that frankincense was the sweat of the gods. They used it to prepare the dead and placed it in the tombs of the Pharaohs.
Frankincense is of particular importance in Christianity, as it embodies the church's devotion and faith in God. It is one of the three gifts the Magi gave to Jesus when they visited him in the manger. Its symbolism endures to this day, where it is used both in church and in the homes of believers as a means of demonstrating their devotion.
Frankincense was introduced to Western Europe in the 11th century by the Frankish Crusaders.
