Characteristics of Thyme

Thyme (Thyme vulgaris) is a perennial, aromatic plant of the Lamiaceae family, known for its intense, spicy aroma. It grows mainly in sunny, dry areas of the Mediterranean and is widely used in cooking, herbal medicine and aromatherapy. The essential oil is obtained by distillation of the flowers and leaves, and its quality may vary depending on the chemotype (e.g. thymol, linalool, geraniol).

History of Thyme

Thyme held an important place in ancient societies. The ancient Greeks used it to fumigate temples and homes due to its laxative power. The Romans added it to their baths for revitalization and believed it enhanced courage. In the Middle Ages, it was used to boost the immune system and protect against infections.

Ingredients

Thyme essential oil from the flowers and stems of the plant, distilled using the hydrodistillation method.

Chemical composition

Thyme essential oil is rich in thymol – a powerful antiseptic, as well as carvacrol, p-cymene, terpinen-4-ol, linalool and borneol. The exact ratio of the components depends on the chemotype and the growing region. The oil is extremely active, with strong antibacterial, antifungal and immunostimulating properties.

Instructions for use

Topical (diluted): It can be applied in a base oil (at a ratio of 1-2%) for rubbing on the chest, joints or to combat skin infections.
Aromatherapy: Suitable for vaporization in a combustion device, during periods of colds or to stimulate the nervous system.

Use in Chinese Medicine & Ayurveda

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, thyme is used to dispel dampness, enhance Qi circulation, and help break up mucus. It is particularly useful in cases of cough and respiratory congestion.
In Ayurveda, it is considered to warm the body and is particularly beneficial for Kapha and Vata doshas, thanks to its properties that promote digestion, detoxify, and act as a tonic for the spirit.

Useful tips

- The use of thyme essential oil should be avoided during pregnancy, breastfeeding and by children.
- Essential oils are intended for external use and are always used dissolved in a carrier oil or other catalyst.
- Avoid direct contact with skin, eyes and mouth.
