How does Agni, the power of digestive fire, contribute to human health?
In fact Ayurveda recognizes a wide range of agni's activities, but at the same time teaches us that weakened fire is the root cause of imbalances in the body that lead to disease.
Many faces, one principle
While there are different names for agni, depending on the area of the body where it is active, the mother fire resides in the stomach and duodenum and is called jataragni. Its functions are:
- The transformation of the food we consume
- Maintains a constant body temperature
- Digestion and absorption of food
- The creation of enzymes
- Stable metabolism
- Tissue nutrition
- Smooth cellular communication
- The perception of the senses (especially vision)
- The color and luster of the skin and hair
- Mental clarity, acumen and good memory
- The determination, the courage
- Discrimination and logic
- Awakening and enthusiasm for life
Healthy Agni
When agni is in balance then we have a strong immune system, longevity and prosperity. Creates strong appetite, good taste and digestion of food. Toxins are burned so the tongue remains clean. It also keeps body weight stable, adds a sense of confidence, security, optimism and love for life.
Factors that help the power of jataragni:
- The hot freshly cooked food.
- We fill 2/4 of our stomach with solid food, ¼ with water, ¼ remains empty.
- We ideally consume the main meal at noon between 12:00 and 14:00.
- We eat in a calm and pleasant environment.
- We choose foods according to our dosha.
- The right combination of foods.
- To include the 6 six tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, spicy, astringent) during the day.
- Physical exercise.
- We seek to spend time in nature and in the sun.
- We do things that please us and avoid oppression.
- Creativity, contact with loved ones.
- We selectively "feed" our senses with beneficial impressions.
According to Ayurveda, the food we consume should be close to its original form (unprocessed), go with the season of the year, be adjusted according to age and health status. Finally, returning to the simple traditional way of life helps to keep the power of the digestive fire active over time.
